Bach’s joyous Magnificat celebrates the Christmas season in a blaze of glory.
The work is a masterpiece of festive exuberance, perfect for the Christmas season! The composer’s use of a large ensemble brings a majestic richness that will fill St. Thomas Chuch with joy and grandeur. The work takes you on a musical journey through 10 versus and a Gloria with musical lines that somehow always seem ascending. The rhythmic energy of the opening and closing choruses sets a perfect, joyful and boisterous mood for the holiday season.

“Bach’s Magnificat is a beloved but notoriously challenging work to perform,” says Bach Ensemble at St. Thomas Artistic Director Carlton Monroe. “Hearing a professional performance from high-caliber musicians like the Bach Ensemble is a ‘bucket-list’ event. The holiday season is filled with wonderful music, but the splendor, beauty, and excitement of the Magnificat are a special and unique experience.

Bach Vespers—November 24, 5:00 pm
Two weeks prior to the Magnificat, the Bach Ensemble will present its third Vespers service of the 2024-2025 season. The orchestra and chorale will present Bach’s cantata BWV 70, Wachet! betet! betet! wachet! (Watch! Pray! Pray! Watch!) along with works by Byrd and Paulus.
With dynamic instrumentation and expressive vocal writing, this BWV 70 blends urgency and reassurance, balancing the themes of vigilance and divine grace. The work was composed in 1723 during Bach’s first year in Leipzig, for the 26th Sunday after Trinity.
“Pilgrim’s Hymn” by Stephen Paulus is a short, stunning meditation for the chorale serene presenting beauty and spiritual depth.
