Dear Friends,

The Bach Ensemble of St. Thomas opens its 2016-2017 series of Bach Vespers services with a special commemoration of the 15th Anniversary of 9/11. The Vespers will be at 5:00pm on Sunday, September 11 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park.

The service will feature the ensemble of professional instrumentalists and choir in a beautiful, stirring, and exciting program of the music of J. S. Bach. At the center of the service is the sacred cantata Wachet! betet! betet! wachet!, BWV 70 (“Watch! Pray! Pray! Watch!). Also included in the service will be the haunting “Agnus Dei” from the B-Minor Mass, and the exquisite motet O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht, BWV 118. Soloists include Melissa Harvey soprano; Adria Caffaro, alto; Andreas Kirtley, tenor; and Jonathan Cooper, bass.

This year, go deeper into the music by joining us at 4:30pm before each Bach Vespers for a Pre-Vespers Talk led by Musicologist Douglas Easterling. Douglas will lead a 20-minute talk each month to offer historical and religious context to the music for that Vespers. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn more and experience more.

The BEST will embark on a monumental project starting this fall: a 20-year quest to perform all of the 200+ sacred cantatas of J. S. Bach. Over the past five years the BEST have performed 37 cantatas, but we’re starting a new count in September. There are very few ensembles in the world capable of taking on a project such as this, and we are excited to be taking the first steps on this incredible musical journey. Join us now for a great ride!

Artistic Director
