October 9 Bach Vespers

October 9
Ach, lieben Christen, seid getrost, BWV 114
Ah, dear Christens, be comforted

Cantata 114 was composed for the same cantata cycle in 1724 as the work featured in our September vespers. Based on a hymn from 1561, it also sets the text of an unknown poet for the other movements. The chorale tune appears in three of the cantata’s movements, and the work is scored for flute, oboes, and strings. Also featured in this service is the haunting motet Ubi caritas by English composer Paul Mealor. The prelude features Cincinnati Symphony principal flute Randy Bowman, who joins with the ensemble to perform Bach’s second Orchestral Suite. Reception to follow.
