January 15 Bach Vespers

January 15
Alles nur nach Gottes Willen, BWV 72
Everything according to God’s will alone

Cantata 72 was written in 1726 for the Third Sunday after Epiphany. Bach later used the opening chorus of this cantata as the Gloria of his Mass in G Minor, BWV 235. The text of the cantata was written by Salomon Franck, whom Bach had a regular collaboration with during his time in Weimar. Years later, Bach would return to the writings of his old colleague for inspiration. The prelude is a significant devotional song of Henry Purcell, depicting Mary’s fear at having lost her son, who is later found teaching in the temple. Reception to follow.
