During Bach’s tenure in Leipzig, he wrote no cantatas for the season of Lent, as “concerted” music (music with instruments) was prohibited. The Bach Ensemble uses this time of year to present some of Bach’s cantatas from other times of the year but that still resonate with Lenten themes. The next Bach Vespers services will feature Cantata No. 93, Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten (“All those who follow God’s guidance”), a cantata which examines that challenge and wonder of our Lenten journey. The prelude to the service will feature Vivaldi’s Oboe Concerto in A minor, RV 461, performed by Cincinnati Symphony Principal Oboe Dwight Parry. Douglas Easterling will offer a pre-Vespers lecture at 4:30 p.m.
