The Cincinnati Bach Ensemble will premiere a new Easter Cantata, The Firstfruits of Them That Slept, by composer Douglas Pew at the Bach Vespers, Sunday, April 27, 6pm at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Joining the CBE will be soloists Kate Tombaugh, James Onstad, and Michael Young, along with the St. Thomas Parish Choir, all under the direction of Carlton Monroe.
Also featured is Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra trumpeter Doug Lindsay, who will perform the Concerto for Trumpet in Eb Major by Jan Krtitel Jiri Neruda as part a prelude recital.
Dr. Pew is Adjunct Professor of Composition and Theory at Northern Kentucky University and Composer-in-Residence at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Cincinnati, OH. His accolades include commissions and performances from the Washington National Opera at the John F. Kennedy Center, Atlanta Opera 24-hour Project, NANOWorks Opera Company, Polish Chamber Choir, Cincinnati Bach Ensemble, Ascend Voices, Miami University Men’s Glee Club, Timpanogos Symphony Orchestra, and various church choirs. He received a Fulbright Grant to study sacred choral composition at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, Poland. Other prizes include a commission from the Barlow Endowment for New Music at BYU, 1st prize in the 2009 SCI/ASCAP Student Composers Commission Competition, multiple awards from the Musica Sacra International Choral Composition Competition in Poland, an ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Award, the Susan and Ford Schumann Fellowship from the Aspen Music Festival and School. He also received multiple grants from the Tangeman Sacred Music Center at the University of Cincinnati, and honorable mentions in the Finale/Eighth Blackbird competition and ASCAP/CBDNA Frederick Fennel Prize. His choral music is published by Boosey & Hawkes, Jackman Music, and his own publishing house, Blue Shore Music.
